Workshop updates

In response to some comments from the community, we’re pulling back some of the requirements for both workshops.

WordPress BootCamp

Previously, the requirements for WordPress Bootcamp were:

  • Have your own server and domain set up,
  • Have an FTP Client and a code editor installed

After talking this over with some community members, we realized this is too far forward of a starting point for the people who need WordPress Bootcamp. Servers set ups are the biggest hurdle for setting up a self-hosted blog and we should definitely teach it.

We initially included this in the prerequisites because it seemed going through purchasing a server plan might get complex and we weren’t sure people should be pulling out their credit cards in the middle of a workshop. Luckily, a wonderful WordPress community member offered to donate 2 months of shared hosting to every WordPress BootCamp attendee. Attendees will still have to purchase their own domain names. We will be sending out a guide to purchasing domain names prior to the workshop and will cover setting up the domain mapping during the workshop.  All you’ll need to do is buy one before the workshop begins.

The new prerequisite for WordPress bootcamp: your own laptop

Child Theming Workshop

Similarly, the child theming workshop required attendees to have their own local development environment set up.  We realize having a local development environment is something a lot of people do not know how to do and would be a valuable thing to teach.

The new prerequisite for the Child Theming workshop:

  • Your own laptop
  • Working knowledge of CSS and HTML
  • a code editor
  • an FTP client

We will be sending out a preparation guide including recommended FTP clients and code editors.

We’ve got an official location, more updates, and a spiffy new design)

Venues!

It seems like its been quiet around here for a few weeks, but the truth is its been busier than ever. The biggest news, we’ve locked down our locations: The Joe Crowley Student Union at the University of Nevada, Reno. If you’re a WordCamp veteran, yes its the same location as last year. The Joe (as students like to call it) has a beautiful theater and ballrooms that are perfect for events like ours.

We’ve also got a location for our workshops and development day: The DeLaMare Science and Technology Library. Tod Colegrove, the head librarian of DeLaMare, has been so supportive of fostering science and technology on campus and we’re really excited that he’s hosting us for our first two-day camp.

The New Look

If you’re here and reading this you’ve probably already noticed the shiny new look. The theme was designed by me and implemented with the help of the totally awesome Daryl Koopersmith. If you’re curious, its a child theme of the WordCamp base theme that changes few things other than the css. The WordCamp Base theme (also by Daryl) is lovely and flexible, so not a lot had to be done to make Reno-Tahoe WordCamp-y.

Sunday Workshops

If you haven’t heard, we’ll be holding two 5-hour workshops on Sunday, June 5th alongside our Development Day: a beginner’s WordPress Bootcamp and a start-to-finish Child Theme Development Workshop. More information is coming on these, but if you’re interested go register or read more about them.

Speakers and Sponsors!

We’ve got a lovely new sponsor since our last update. Noble Studios is a Carson City-based web and UI thinktank that knows WordPress is on the rise.  Big thanks to Noble Studios!

Remember, we’re still looking for awesome speakers and sponsors. Please head over to the speaker and sponsor pages if you’re interested!

Early Bird Registration is still open!

Just a reminder that early bird registration is still open and will be open until April 10th!

We have a new sponsor! Digital Delirium!

We’d like to thank Jonathan Denwood at Digital Delirium for becoming our second Platinum sponsor! Jonathan attended last year’s Reno-Tahoe WordCamp and was so impressed by our efforts and the WordPress community that he decided to sponsor Reno-Tahoe WordCamp 2011.

Digital Delirium is a web design and search engine optimization agency that helps businesses in Reno and Northern Nevada sell and create a presence online. Digital Delirium is closely associated with Successful Sites, a UK based design and development company.

Thanks Jonathan and Digital Delirium!
